Search Ads and Search Premium
Like other major search engines, Brave Search is ad-supported. But there’s a crucial difference: Brave uses its own private alternative to traditional search ads. It’s a way to deliver helpful results—which can sometimes be ads—all while protecting your privacy.
Brave Search Ads don’t rely on tracking, data collection, or user profiling to target users. You have the option to use Brave Search with private ads, or to sign up for ad-free Search Premium.

Are Brave Search results better quality than Google?
Both Brave Search and Google use their own independent index of the Web to deliver search results (meaning neither source results from a different search engine). But Google “personalizes” search results based on all the data they’ve collected about you, while Brave Search takes a different approach. Brave Search doesn’t personalize results, so the same query will produce the same results no matter who typed it into the search bar.
Brave Search also builds its index via the Web Discovery Project, which uses anonymous browsing data from real users to understand which pages people find most useful—meaning higher-quality results and less junk than Google. You can also customize your Brave Search experience with Goggles, which lets you alter your search results ranking according to your own preferences (which Brave would never do for you).

Goggles let you customize your search engine results pages (SERPs) according to your own rules or filters. They’re openly developed by the community of Brave Search users, so you can select Goggles from the list that people have published, or create your own. Brave Search Discussions detect discussion-worthy topics. If a query or topic is deemed discussion-worthy, Brave Search will automatically source additional results from forums (like Reddit or StackExchange) and display those in search results.

Snippets provide richer information (like locations, lists, direct answers, featured descriptions, etc.) in a “preview” format at the top of search results pages. The basics of navigating Brave Search
On the surface, Brave Search works much like any other search engine you’re used to.
Once you search, you’ll land on a familiar-looking results page. From here, you can navigate through multiple pages of results, or filter by:

Brave Search is a search engine developed by Brave Software, Inc., and is the default search engine for the Brave web browser in certain countries.[2]
Brave Search is a search engine developed by Brave Software, Inc. and released in Beta in March 2021, following the acquisition of Tailcat, a privacy-focused search engine from Cliqz.[3] Brave Search aims to use its independent index to generate search results. However, the user can allow the Brave browser to anonymously check Google for the same query.[4]
In October 2021, Brave Search was made the default search engine for Brave browser users in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom (replacing Google Search), France (replacing Qwant) and Germany (replacing DuckDuckGo).[5]
In June 2022, Brave Search ended its beta stage and was fully released. In addition to the launch, the new Goggles feature was added, allowing users to apply their own rules and filters to search queries.[6]

Brave Search implements some level of data collection only when users opt in through the Web Discovery Project (WDP). The project is a methodology and system developed by Brave Software, Inc. which collects data generated by their users while claiming to protect users privacy and anonymity.[11] Users can opt in at any time while using the search engine by modifying their settings. No account is required for this function.[12] As of 2022, data from the WDP was used to inform the ranking of search results.[7]
